NIPT & Prenatal Testing

Prenatal Testing

NIPT is the most accurate non-invasive prenatal screening test for Down Syndrome. This blood test is available at Ascot Radiology, Auckland, from 10 weeks of pregnancy.

The prenatal screening programme for Down Syndrome and other conditions has been in place in New Zealand since 2007. The combination of clinical factors, serum levels (Papp-A and bHCG) and nuchal translucency scanning gives women in the first trimester of pregnancy a high quality risk result.

If a woman has a high-risk result (1 in 300 or higher), she can choose to have a more invasive test (amniocentesis or Chorionic Villus Sampling) to determine whether the fetus has Down Syndrome.

In addition to these tests, we are delighted to announce the addition of an exciting new service that will allow us to provide more comprehensive first trimester screening: Non Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) for Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome).

Developed and overseen by Dr Emma Parry, Subspecialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine, this service will provide:

  • The only Auckland-based provider with counselling included in all packages.
  • The only Auckland-based provider with a turnaround of less than one week.
