This procedure is performed for chronic lower back pain originating from the spine and issometimes done for chronic hip pain.
What does it involve?
The procedure is performed under fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance. The patient lies prone on the x-ray table and local anaesthetic is injected to numb the skin at the level of interest. A needle is then inserted into the affected area and a steroid or anaesthetic is injected to numb the nerve endings.
How long will it take?
This examination takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Is there any preparation?
There is no preparation for this examination.
Aftercare:
It is important to monitor the injection site for any signs or symptoms of infection over the next 24 hours. If there is any sign of redness, swelling or pain over the area, please contact your GP as soon as possible.
