The patient is asked to empty their bladder prior to starting the examination. A small needle is inserted into a vein in the arm and contrast medium (dye) is injected. A series of x-rays are taken of the kidneys, ureters and bladder at set time intervals. These images show the contrast moving through the kidneys and down into the bladder, and are used to assess how the urinary system is functioning. Sometimes a compression band is applied to the patient's lower abdomen to obtain better images of the kidneys.

This examination takes approximately 1 hour.
Is there any preparation?
Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the examination.
