Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

What is it?

This is an examination of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

What does it involve?

A questionnaire of the patient's gynaeclogical history is completed before the start of the examination by the radiology nurse. A tube is then inserted into the patient's cervix and is held in place by a very small balloon. Contrast media (dye) is slowly injected to fill the uterus and x-rays are taken as the contrast flows through the fallopian tubes. At the end of the procedure, the tube is removed an any remaining contrast will drain from the uterus once the patient stands up.

How long will it take?

This examination takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Is there any preparation?

The patient must be in days 5 to 12 of her menstrual cycle.
