Defaecating Proctogram

What is it?

This examination concentrates on the lower 10cms of your large bowel and the way the muscles around this area work.

What does it involve?

After an initial plain x-ray of the abdomen, a thick barium paste is inserted into the rectum and another x-ray is taken. You will then be seated on a receptacle and a video will be recording as you pass the barium paste. The Radiologist will discuss the findings with you after the test.

How long will it take?

This examination takes approximately 10 minutes once the barium paste is inserted.

Is there any preparation?

As the last part of your bowel needs to be clean and empty at the time of the examination, you will be supplied with a suppository. The suppository is inserted into the rectum one hour before your examination. Retain the suppository for 15 minutes, then empty your bowel whenever required over the next 45 minutes. If you are concerned about travelling after inserting the suppository, you may come to the radiology department one hour prior to your examination and insert it when you arrive.

Aftercare:

There are showers available in the radiology department for your use after the examination.
